Palazzo del Podestà
The Palazzo del Podestà, or Palazzo Pretoriale, is a Gothic Venetian style building from the 1400s in Piazza Maggiore in Malamocco. It is located in front of the Church S.Maria Assunta. It was the seat of the mayor who governed Malamocco up until 1339.
It overlooks the lagoon and features a balcony with a trifora window and a bas-relief of a lion from the XVI century. On the left is a deer with a shield bearing a cross and the coat of arms of Malamocco.
Today the Palace is the seat of a permanent exhibition Metamauco, which shows a collection of medieval ceramics found in Malamocco, photographs and explanations on the archaeological digs. There is also a computerised exhibit showing dates and descriptions of the history of the island. Civil marriages are celebrated in the large central room of the palace..
