St Lorenzo Cathedral
Established in the XVIII century by architect Bernardo Maccaruzzi, it is made up of a neoclassical façade. Next to it is a bell tower in fired brick dating from a prior building (1513).
There is discussion however over the Cathedral’s origins, that its roots go further back into the past, probably the Middle Ages, because of its dedication to St Lorenzo, an early Christian martyr.
The neoclassical façade is made up of two orders whilst it is designed in a Latin cross, with a single nave.
The main door is decorated with precious bronze plaques: they represent St Lorenzo and Michael’s martyrdom, and are a Gianni Aricò work. The windows are likewise adorned with scenes from the two saints’ lives.
Inside the Cathedral, the main altar is decorated with an altar piece by Ludovico Pozzoserrato from 1593 whilst the secondary altar displays Gaspare Diziani’s ‘Sacred Family’.
La Madonna del Don, a Russian icon preserved in the vestry, is object of the Alpini military corps’ particular devotion, as they found it during the Russian campaign in 1943, and successively donated it to the Cathedral.
The dome is decorated with G.B. Canal’s fresco ‘The Sacred Trinity’s Glory’ of 1797.
Behind the Cathedral is the so called Scola dei Battuti of 1302, the only art corporation in Mestre.
