Early in his career Handel came to Italy, where he wrote operas in the Italian style and in the Italian language, including Agrippina, which had its premiere in Venice.  He spent most of his time in Rome, where he became famous and was introduced into music circles and met famous musicians like Domenico Scarlatti and Arcangelo Corelli.  He soon met the Cardinals Ottoboni and Pamphilj as well as the aristocrat Marchese Ruspoli, who became his patrons.  At this time he wrote many beautiful Italian cantatas, songs which are like miniature dramatic scenes.  Some of the original cantata scores are in the Marciana Library in Venice.  Although he soon left Italy and spent most of his life in England, Handel continued to write beautiful operas in Italian.  In the concert on Sunday there will be arias and cantatas by Handel sung by Liesl Odenweller, and chamber music performed by Marija Jovanovic, spinet, Pier Paolo Ciurlia, lute, and Stevano Bet, transverse flute.
