The Rowing Season 2009

Every year from April to September, in Venice and on the lagoon, there are more than 120 regattas, in addition to the famous Historical Regatta.
Many of these races are spontaneous; eleven are promoted by the Municipality of Venice in collaboration with the Rowers' Associations and the Co-ordination of the Rowing Clubs with the aim of keeping alive a sporting practice which originates from the very nature of the city. Many of these regattas coincide with traditional festivities and festivals where the race once represented an occasion of not only true popular but also institutional glory.

Burano's Regatta - Burano Island
The regatta of Burano close the rowing season and is considered as the return match of the Historical Regata. The competion take place in the waters in front of the island.
The regata is visible form the fondamenta.

Pellestrina's Regatta
Pellestrina's Regatta teakes place on the first Sunday of August (this year on August the 2nd), during the Madonna dell'Apparizione Feast, an event deeply appreciated by the citizens which brings hundreds of visitors into the island.

Malamocco Regatta
Malamocco Regatta takes place during the Madonna della Marina Feast. The regatta is visible onshore along the way from Malamocco to Alberoni.

Murano's regatta
Murano's Regatta takes place on Sunday 5th July in the waters in front of Murano Island. It is a competition reserved to one row boats where champions, women and young participants can express their ability.

The SS.Giovanni e Paolo's Regatta takes place on Sunday 21st June. This competition was born to maintain the rowing passion among young venitian under 25 years old.

Sant' Erasmo Regatta
On June the 2nd there is the Sant'Erasmo Regatta, the first regatta of the season reserved to women who will compete on slender and fast two rows mascarete and the first regatta for young who will compete on two rows pupparini.

Festa della Sensa
The Festa della Sensa (or Ascension Day Festival) commemorates an historical event that took place in May the 9th 1000, confirming Venecian dominion on the sea with the famous annual “Nuptial”. Today the event takes place every year on Ascension Day and it is one of the most important and sumptuous celebrations interweaving the legend, myth and history of the city.

La Regata di Castello o del XX settembre. Sembrerebbe il classico annuncio di una prossima regata, ma non è così, in quanto è una vecchia regata che si teneva tra l'Ottocento e il Novecento a Venezia. Una regata su gondola ma è anche il titolo e l'argomento dell'ultimo libro scritto dallo storico Giorgio Crovato.

Redentore Regatta
The week end of the Redentore feast will end with the Redentore Regatta, the departure and arrival of which is the Tempio Votivo of Redentore. The regatta is visible from the fondamenta that coasts the Giudecca Canal.
