Homage to Torcello during the celebration of one thousand years of the Basilica
The history, the archaeology and the art
The celebration of one thousand years of the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta of Torcello (1008 – 2008) is an occasion to sum it up what has been done for the cathedral during a two days conference, scheduled for June 3 and 4.
In the last decades many discoveries have been done thanks to the archaeological researches, the restaurations and conservative interventions, the analysis of historical sources and the architectural, sculptural and mosaic studies. The conference wants to put together all these attestation to pay an homage to Torcello and to offer them to the city and to the scientific community.
The choise of using two locations for the conference has been made to symbolically go back over the path of history, art and faith that from Venice bring back to the origin of Torcello.
The conference will open on June 3 at the Museo Diocesano di Venezia with the theme “The historical sources: the archaeology” and will continue the day after in Torcello, in the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta. The themes of the second and last day are “The architecture and the art” and “The restaurations and the conservation interventions”. During that day the Basilica will be closed to the public, while the campanile and the Museum will remain open.
