Concert The Marriage of Venice and the Sea
Music for the Day of Ascension
On Sunday 24th May 2009 at 5 p.m. in the Church of San Nicolò in Venice Lido there will be a concert of 17th-century Venetian sacred music performed by the VeniDilecteMi Vocal to celebrate the Ascension Day.
The “Festa della Sensa” will include a regatta, a fair, and the “Sposalizio del mare”, when the Mayor will go in a boat from the bay of St. Mark’s to the Lido and perform the famous ceremony of the “Marriage of Venice to the Sea”.
However, “Festa della Sensa ” is also an important religious holiday, the Day of Ascension. This year, to celebrate the event, there will be not only a Mass at San Nicolò on the Lido in the morning, but also later in the day at San Nicolò at 5 p.m. the Associazione Culturale MusicaVenezia will present a concert of 17th-century Venetian sacred music based on Biblical, liturgical and devotional texts for Ascension Day performed by the VeniDilecteMi Vocal and Instrumental Group conducted by Jonathan Pradella and introduced by Roberta Reeder.
It will include works by Monteverdi, Cavalli, Grandi, with many rare, unpublished pieces, performed for the first time in the modern period.
