St Mark’s Treasure
In St Mark’s Basilica it is possible to admire such treasures as the famous altar piece, The Pala d’Oro, a gothic-byzantine goldsmith’s wrok, and a collection of sacred works of art.
This collection, known as the Basilica’s Treasure, is principally made up of oriental objects dated VI/XII century which were imported into Venice after the conquest of Constantinople in 1204.
The collection also includes a range of Venetian and western goldsmith’s art of later centuries.
The Treasure counts about 300 objects, many of which are carved from valuable materials and embedded with precious stones.
It is spread out amongst three different rooms: the Antitesoro, where Francesco Francesconi’s silver statue of St Mark, dated 1804, can be found; the Santuario (sanctuary), which holds 110 relic-containers and a rare oriental antependium, a decorated altar frontal in alabaster; and finally The Treasure (restored in 1938).
The route follows a chronological form displaying vases, amphorae, Egyptian cups, roman ones (amongst which particular value can be given to the pail or situla representing hunting scenes), and again byzantine and Asian ones, byzantine icons, glass and coppa-crystal goblets (amongst which the rare cruet from the X century with Kufic inscriptions), relic-containers of the XIII-XVIII centuries, sacred objects, a venetian goldsmith antependium from the XIII century, bindings of sacred books (St Mark’s bible is of the greatest value).
In the entrance is St Mark’s historic desk (VI century) and an embossed block of oriental cipolin marble.
Inside the basilica, one can visit, behind the principal altar, the magnificent Pala d’Oro, a work of art crafted by byzantine and venetian goldsmiths, at alternate phases, between the X and XIV century.
