The Venice Med(F)Est
This is the first edition of the Venice Med(F)Est, a festival that celebrates the Mediterranean and Eastern European Cultures, from the 3rd July to 3rd August, 2008.
The festival is a crossroads between nations, cultures and traditions within Europe and the Mediterranean.
The Venice Med(F)Est presents itself as an experimental dialogue between different cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean and Eastern European region to promote the changing and in some ways contaminated artistic disciplines and traditions.
"The inspiration behind the Med(F)est is to contribute to the creation of a Euro-Mediterranean identity through interaction, knowledge and exchange in a wide range of ways,' said city councillor responsible for cultural productions, Luana Zanella during a press conference.
The event aims to be one of the principle European festivals of world music and traditional theatre from the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe. It is sponsored and works with the Ministry of Culture in many European countries and is organised by the council office responsible for Cultural Productions in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture in Spain, the Casinò in Venice, the agency Marketing&Eventi, the Servizio cittadinanza delle Donne e cultura delle differenze and the municipality.
Most of the performances are free and centre around eight different themes:Voci di donne,(women’s voices) Venezia Suona, Festa!, World Jazz, Teatro in campo,(theatre in the piazza) Nuove Fondamenta and Venezia Jazz Festival.
Women’s voices or Voci di donne, covers three days of performances ranging from theatre to an African fashion show, a concert by Giovanna Marini and the presentation of a book by Randa Gashi, an Italian/Egyptian writer. The programme will be staged at the Parco Piraghetto, Mestre.
Venezia Suona is the famous musical show that performs every summer in Venice in small squares and lesser known streets. It is an opportunity to kick back and listen to music from all over of the world in every style with Venice as an open air back drop.
Forte Marghera is the fantastic venue at the gates of Mestre for the 8th July musical Festa!
Opening night will find Khaled in concert and other leaders on the world music international scene with rap from the south of Italy, Caparezza and the Sud Sound System. Wrapping things up is the Ochestra di Piazza Vittorio with its rich timber and rhythm mix.
Venice really parties on Redentore. It is one of the city’s most loved traditonal feast days. At Venice Med(f)Est there will be a concert given by World Jazz with the Ska-j, Nono, Bianchi and their multimedia performance, Mitsoura, with a surprising mix of electronic and traditional Rom music from Hungary, Tuareg Blues which brings together African melodies with the extraordinary voice of Bachir Charaf and finally the Bandorkestra, with its mix of ethnic, swing, ska, afro and boogie-woogie.
