Venetian Oselle. The gift from the Doge

The collection of the Banca Popolare di Vicenza

Venetian Oselle. The gift from the DogeFrom March 7th to April 5th the entire and unique collection of Venetian Oselle will be displayed in Biblioteca Marciana, the ancient seat of the Zecca di Stato (mint) where the oselle were coined.

After more than 10 years of research in national and International numismatic market, the Banca Popolare di Vicenza has attempted to collect all the series of oselle coined during Serenissima Republic, from 1521 until the fall of the Serenissima. Every year the Doge donated these coins to the most important Venetian noble families, replacing the ancietn traditional gift that consisted of a pair of wild ducks from the Marano lagoon, thus the name 'Oselle', 'wild fowls' in local dialect.
