Sweet temptations in Venice
Carnival is the perfect time to throw caution to the wind when it comes to partying, masks and desserts that are the delight of sweet toothed connoisseurs. It is impossible to resist the sweet temptations that fill bakeries at Carnival. There are fritelle or doughnuts with cream or zabaione, there are castagnole and galani of every type – a type of fritter- biscuit s that comes thick or thin, cooked in the oven or fried and sprinkled with icing sugar – vanilla flavoured and not.
The fritola which is the number one dessert among the people was made in bakeries but also directly in the streets in large wooden square shaped bowls.
Even now the city is full of the perfume of doughnuts and a feeling of festivity is in the air. The shops continue making these famous, popular desserts in a race against time before Lent begins.
Even the most saintly couldn’t pass by a bakery without succumbing to the temptation.
Fritelle, galanis or veneziane are everywhere at Carnival!
It is difficult to find a bad one in Venice.
It really must be said that the quality is high. Few people know also that a doughnut (fritella) can be frozen and then reheated in the microwave…which is always a good tip for those considering abstinence during Lent.
