Church of the Madonna dell'Orto

Chiesa Madonna dell'OrtoThis monumental Gothic church is placed in the northern most part of the area known as Cannaregio.  It looks onto the churchyard which still retains the original paving decorated in the old ‘fish-bone’ brick layout.

It was Tintoretto’s own parish church and his body, since 1594, can be found entombed in the chapel on the right of the sacristy.
The church was built in the 14th and 15th centuries and consecrated to St Christopher but it soon took on the name given by the people – Madonna dell’Orto - in honour of an image of Our Lady and baby Jesus that appeared in a vegetable garden nearby. The magnificent brick façade is adorned with statues.
The large entry door is Gothic-Renaissance in style and shows the transition from Roman to Gothic and from Gothic to Renaissance style.  Next to it is the old school for merchants – the Scuola dei Mercanti.

The luminous interior is basilica in style with three naves.  There are works of art of extraordinary value,  in particular, some important examples of Tintoretto’s work such as St Agnes which can be found in the Contarini Chapel.
The 14th century altar piece by Cima da Conegliano (1493) represents St John the Baptist and saints.
The Valier Chapel with its beautiful Renaissance structure, held a small painting by Giovanni Bellini of the Madonna with child (1480), inside the tabernacle. Sadly, it was stolen in 1993.
