Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli
The church can be found in a tiny square called the Miracoli. Its exterior and interior is decorated with many coloured marble.
Its ‘bijoux’ like size and the preciousness of its decoration make it a wonderful example of Venetian Renaissance architecture.
It is the work of Pietro Lombardo and his workshop between 1481 and 1489.
The church was commissioned by Angelo Amadi to house an image of the Virgin with Child and Saints by Nicolò di Pietro (14th– 15th century ). The painting was said to be miraculous and can now be seen on the altar.
According to tradition, the marvellous multi-coloured marble, used both internally and externally, came from what was left over of the building of St Mark’s Basilica.
The elegant two form facade is introduced by a semi circular front and enriched by rose windows.
The interior has one nave and is outstanding in its refined elegance.
The author of the sculptures decorating the main part of the church and the elevated main altar is Tullio Lombardo.
